Why do you like Michael Phelps?
Just a short topic that has interested me lately. The level of Michael Phelps fanaticism has surprised me by its intensity. People who wouldn't have known the difference between a backstroke and a breaststroke 2 weeks ago are today knowledgeably remarking on the different races. What is it about Michael Phelps that you like so much? Tell me below. (I had a jokingly cynical post in mind, but a glance at my Xanga sarcasm bank account shows that I emptied most of it yesterday and should stay away from further withdrawals for a while.
)For me, I think he's a little goofy, and the athletic success doesn't mean much to me since I dislike swimming. However, I'm pretty sure I'd give up both pinkies to be 6'5" and in that great shape. The man gets to eat 12,000 calories a day! But to be honest, my interest in members of the Phelps family looks a little more like this:

ha-ha, why yes I got a little crush during the Olympics, how did you know?

I didn't watch the olympics... but there is this crazy little 8th grade girl I know who wants a Michael Phelps poster. And swimming lessons. And a "I <3 Michael Phelps" shirt.
hah, it looks like his face is covered with flies ...
why do i like michael phelps? his incredible luck and good fortune (plus the ability to make for good TV). watching him over the course of the olympics was like watching the American dream in action. cheesy? yes. but totally true.
oh yeah, and he's got a hott body. that helps.
I like Michael Phelps no more than I like Sanya Richards with her amazing performance in the women's 4x400 - I find those who keep their mind fixed on the goal, straining for the prize, going all in and when there shouldn't be anythign left, to give even more, to win by a fraction of a second, inspiring. It encourages me about what I should be striving for by faith in the race of life.
And gets to eat 12,000 calories a day? No matter how much you love food, that is not fun.
Some people liken him to 'Superman' due to his incredible feats as a swimmer. The guy did win 16 gold medals after all.
Careful there Greek. You might have an easier time cracking jokes on Jesus than on Phelps.
@vanedave - HAHAHAHA I know! I'm pretty sure there are more Phelpsians than Christians in America right now :-p
I love him because he's a Marylander like me and I swam in high school on my school team and so I can respect how hard he has to work. He's kind of cute in a goofy sort of way too... I'll admit it
Like him? I wouldn't say I like him ... I don't even know him. However, I do admire his talent and tenacity. And let's be honest, he's pretty easy on the eyes...
Eh.
He represents America. Even if we don't know what he does, the fact that he 'wins' is important to people. I personally like the fact that he most likely was a goofy, misshapen, poorly spoken kid who has ended up making history.
I think for a lot of the people I know, their love from Michael Phelps stems from their pride in the United States. They see him as representing the USA and showing other countries that we're still around and we're still tough and we still have a lot of patriotic feelings coursing through our veins. It feels good to be a part of a country that kicks ass.
can't say I have a crush like every other female out there.
OK, this post literally made me laugh out loud. Good stuff! I'm also intrigued by the overall hype around Olympians, who will be largely forgotten in a few weeks....a days in some cases. I think Phelps has staying power, but I'm still not going to follow him.
Oh yeah, I'd give up both pinkies, too, if I could be 6'5".....Whether I'm in shape or not!
Well put......I watch the Olympics, but the only sport I really know about is Gymnastics. All I know is Phelps broke a lot of world records =)
Two commenters mentioned that they love his talent and tenacity and that watching him was like watching an American dream. I totally agree with that, but I also like hearing how he is sticking it to people who want to befriend him now after torturing him in school about his appearance. Every one of his gold medals is shouting, "Suck on that!!"
Maybe people like big ears!
I think he just has this slightly clueless air about him, like he just wants to swim and compete and doesn't really care much about all the hype and pressure. And he is tremendously talented! Athletically he's someone we can be proud to have represent us. I for one really enjoyed watching him swim.
he only eats like that while training... not ALL the time.
don't hate Michael Phelps. i think you really dislike that people like him so much. 8 gold medal will do that.
hate him for attend UM. yuck.
Thank you, heh... I'm trying to avoid the temptation to continuously log onto Xanga... there's important things to be done. Like life.
He's goofy looking - that's why I like him. His mom is amazing, she did a darn good job raising him without a dad. But his sisters are pretty hot too. Especially the one on the left. =D
See I knew if I dug long enough I would discover something about you I don't like..... How can you dislike swimming?!!! Gliding through the water is so relaxing. Water polo, scuba diving, snorkeling, water skiing, the list goes on and on..... I have physical withdrawals if I am away from some form of water for very long..... What about all those amazing beaches in Greece?....... sigh....... dislike swimming?... that is so sad.........
@echois23 - Ha! I nearly drowned once or twice as a child, and took forever to learn to swim. I should really practice, but I'm afraid the sea and me will never quite be friends.
