  • Some Ideas on Xanga Improvement

I wanted to start a conversation on ideas for how Xanga can improve itself. TheXangaTeam has already started this, but here are some thoughts I've had lately. About 3 years ago, I wrote a post titled "Could Xanga have Retained its Popularity?" on what Xanga could do to improve itself. Given that Xanga is once again working on self-improvement, and that Vanedave did a post on this recently, I thought it was a good time to do such a post again.

Lifestyle Blogging, Not Topic Blogging: I was very much in favor of the -ish sites 3 years ago, because I thought there was still room on the web to grow such sites. Now, however, seems like special interest areas are flooded with blogs. So I'm wondering, is it time to shift focus? Less blogging about things, more about personalities?
I am wondering what Xanga can do to create blogging stars that people outside Xanga would want to follow, in much the same way Youtube has accomplished this. There are certainly several people on here who have a cult following. But to be honest, most of the time the people who are popular on here work hard for it and wouldn't be appealing to a broader audience. What I'm saying is, find people who are doing interesting things like going to another country for 6 months, doing a fashion internship in NYC, or creating art. Bloggers like @rvexpeditions or the late beloved @jstickmann might be perfect for such a site.
*What if Xanga would create a blog section called "Collegetown" and choose 6 students to blog throughout the school year about their ups and downs? This might encourage other students to blog.
*What if Xanga created a blog that collected the work of such guy bloggers as @ItIsAllGravy, @Cakalusa, @GodlessLiberal, @Vanedave, and @Paul_Partisan ? All have rather edgy humor, similar ages, etc., and if collected in one blog, updates would be more frequent.
*Is it worth it to take out a Google or Facebook ad to promote some of the better Xangans and attract some visitors?

Branding: The word "Xanga" should mean something positive when people hear it. The challenge Xanga faces is to either aim for a different brand image or to work at reaching people who want what the brand offers. I think that no matter how may new features Xanga adds, it won't matter if the brand image doesn't improve. This should be a high priority. An additional problem is that because most Xangans write only about themselves instead of about hot topics, Xanga is not as visible as it should be on search engines. Isn't that right, George Clooney Hot Sandwiches Butter Jessica Biel With Obama Crazy Fun?
*Could Xanga better target the youth market? Xanga suffers from an identity crisis: its -ish sites and reputation skews young, but many of the top bloggers are older. I think Xanga needs to find a way to better feature younger writers.
*Could Xanga actually change its name altogether? Luring people back to a site they think they know everything about can be difficult. I wonder if the time has come to completely rebrand.

Tastemaking: Steve Jobs once said that great products were a triumph of taste, of “trying to expose yourself to the best things humans have done and then trying to bring those things into what you are doing." At its best, Xanga was great at finding creative work that Xangans were doing and putting it on the front page. I understand that was difficult work, and takes a lot of time. And I don't wish to ignite the old argument over "Most Views, or Selected Content" on the front page. All I'll say is, Xanga needs to do more curating and make sure that good content produced on the network is found and emphasized. It's not just about providing the tools, it's about also sorting through content. And many people who have left mentioned that Xanga did not seem tasteful enough anymore.
*What about using Paper.li to create a "Best of Xanga Writing" daily paper?

Contests and SEO: One of the best ways to lure outsiders into a site is to have contests. Xanga has a lot of contests already, but even more would help. There's a lot of research on gamification and how creating contests and making everything into a game can be rewarding. I am not suggesting Xanga go the way of myspace and tagged and focus solely on games. But I am saying that some contests, especially if they are geared in such a way to help Xanga's search engine rankings, could be good. Featured questions were good, but perhaps could be re-organized to better get people's attention. People could vote on their favorite entry, perhaps. This can also help to perhaps have people write more content that could attract search engine traffic by focusing on a hot topic.
    * But what about a "Contest of the Week" feature that in some way can bring in outsiders to try to compete?
    * What about having a "Theme of the Week" on a writing topic?

Community: Yes, we all whine about the community on occasion, but it's still one of the best features Xanga has going for it. When people return, they usually say that they missed not having the same community on other blogging sites. Used properly, it can still be a strength for Xanga. Features such as@MyHomeIsWriting, @confessionsandsecrets, @seedsower's Sunday feature, and @Featured_Grownups help by drawing on the resources of the community. I do think Xanga can strengthen its community by taking a more aggressive stance against trolls whose sole purpose is to disrupt the community and by protecting its top bloggers against the inevitable hating and envy. (Although don't ask me what to do about top bloggers who are trolls, heh). Otherwise, I can't think of more ways to fix this.

Cool Analytics: It amazes me how obsessed Xangans became over earning "True" status. They started analyzing their total posts and doing whatever they could to game the numbers so they could get that badge. Why not go further and offer a full range of statistics? I want to know what my most viewed and least viewed posts were, most popular times, most visited days. All this is already stored in our blogs, so why not write some quick code and make this more available to us? Numbers have a way of making people want to post more. Please, @TheXangaTeam?
*Why not create a module on each page displaying our most read and most recommended posts?

  • All great ideas, though it's mildly hypocritical of me to want other people to blog when I hardly do it myself >_>

I just hope they listen, I think these could all really improve the community.

  • Why not create a module on each page displaying our most read and most recommended posts?

Such module already exists if you switch your module to a new module in look and feel options.

  • These are all good ideas!

  • @bmojsilo - Ah! really? I'm trying to find it and can't. Have a direct link?

  • i kind of just want to blog. lol.

  • Did you sign up for the Product Council cause some of this stuff is fantastic. I've hashed out some of this stuff with them already and I really think it needs to be kicked into gear.

  • Paul_Partisan is far from comical. How dare you suggest we group him with such great minds as ItIsAllGravy, VaneDave and Cakalusa!

  • I feel like you and I are on similar wavelengths.  Almost all of these were things I was gonna talk to the Xanga Team about.  You worded it very well.

  • I like how I'm part of the problem at one point (being a topic blogger) then part of the solution next (being a comedic writer).

  • @GodlessLiberal - Gasp. Are you trying to say you're one-dimensional? Forgive me for trying to assume you were multi-dimensional. But seriously, I would ask you, don't you get much better response for a silly pulse or post than you do your more serious, topical material? That is how I have found it, at least.

  • @Roadlesstaken - @vanedave - Yeah, I'll be mumbling my answers to some poor Xanga Team member tonight. This was my pre-game attempt to clarify my thoughts.

  • All really good ideas. I'm surprised I got mentioned at all considering I've basically removed myself from the Xanga scene over the last couple weeks, and there is no future promise of XWS returning; though @TheInkWell is still around, but I'm not involved anymore, or I've taken a temporary leave of absence, I'm not sure which at the moment.

  • @GreekPhysique - It truly depends on the serious post.

  • yea bro good points...xanga could do alot more...

  • Thanks for sharing your good ideas. And thanks for the mention! I do hope that Xanga takes your comments into consideration. I have been considering moving to a different platform quite often of late -- in large part because of the aesthetics and what can and cannot be done to make a Xanga site look decent.

  • very impressive, dear John! I think a few individuals have tried to utilize some of these ideas, but so far nothing in a large, cohesive manner. I look forward to see whether Xanga takes some of these into consideration =]

  • Very thoughtful ideas, all.  The one that most catches my attention is the one about better curating.  To be honest, I rarely go to the front page because a lot of the stuff there is crap.  I don't mind content that has points of view I disagree with, but shallow, poorly-written blogs don't hold any appeal to me and, I'd imagine, many other potential readers.  The front page really should be a "best of what's going on in Xangaland right now".

  • often, improvement is found by going backwards not forwards. Less is also, often, more and I hope Xanga avoids a race to Facebook-ize itself and continues its quiet anonymousness ... it is what brought me here and it is what will keep me here. I suspect much depends on what drew us here in the first place, and I, for one, miss the old days before analytics took front and centre and credits, the endlessly frustrating @ comment back option, -ishs, eprops and such became de rigueur.

  • Good thoughts, bro.  Would be interesting to see which ones will come about as things here evolve. :)

  • ive missed your posts. but yes, you do bring up a lot of good points. its been interesting seeing how xanga has (or has not) shifted with the times and it is obvious that there are a lot of places that they can improve in.

  • I will remind you, I saw pics of you in a ny meet, you are hot, bone serenadante for me. Strip! Talk about your dating. You alone can save xanga without the asians, clowns, and political instigators.

  • I honestly just like Xanga for what it is. It's kind of like that bar that nobody goes to, you walk in and see the same people every night.  While it's maybe not the BEST time in the world, it's guaranteed fun.

    @FuhkAwf - YES!

  • @GreekPhysique - yeah, I'm up this evening. How'd yours go?

  • Thanks for sharing your ideas. :)

  • Good ideas! But I like that Xanga has an under the radar community. If it becomes super popular I'm gonna be compelled to leave! What I liked is that I can post stuff privately yet still have feedback from a "community"; I treat Xanga like a journal that talks back to me haha.

Maybe it's strange but for the most part I don't want all of my real life people to see it. I mean how many people write in their journal and then show it to all their friends? It's one of the main reasons why I stopped posting on Facebook and came back to Xanga.

But I don't wish to squash Xanga's ambitions. I wish the Xanga team the best. Livejournal here I come! (Is that even still around?)

  • May I point it out that ItIsAllGravy created dozens of troll sites and is guilty of Malaysian bashings around here? You want Xanga Team to featured him now? Are you insane? I shut down my old account because of the anti-Malaysian trolls around here. You might as well give a medal to Gravy for trolling.

The only way to make Xanga works again is for the troublemakers and trolls to leave Xanga permanently and give non-native English speakers like me a chance to speak and share our blogs on Xanga. Xanga should also focus on the Asian community and Asian issues around here. We're tired of blogs that focus on the Western fashion and trends on the Ish sites.

  • I like some of your ideas in theory, but many of the bloggers you choose as an example, um, no. Thoughtful post anyway.

  • I personally feel that the current character of Xanga is what attracts bloggers. It's sort of like the blogging website that the world forgot and the fact that it's not necessarily all that popular and commercialized is what keeps people here.

I personally don't know how I'd feel if the site transformed overnight and there was a flood of new readers. I actually think a good amount of people would leave, but like you said this would open the door for new bloggers and new content.

As long as Xanga doesn't become a bastardized collection of picture blogs and rehashed .GIF files like Tumblr, I'd be open to anything.

  • these are some interesting ideas. I wonder how many of these will actually be taken into consideration.

  • @tokyoexpressman - lol. that is kind of the allure. I also have a blogger site. it isn't as much fun because there isn't much commenting.

  • Great ideas.

The contest idea sounds like a ton of fun. I'm currently hosting a Halloween costume contest right now and if I was asked by someone to organise future contests, I'd really enjoy that.

I absolutely love statistics and numbers, so having a personal statistics page of most popular posts would make me uber happy :3

  • It's always the community aspect of Xanga that keeps me coming back. The friends I've met here are incredible... :)

  • I am not around anymore. One of the reasons is I look elsewhere for reading material. Usually online new sources. Current Events. To be honest, I tried to shut my site down. It dumped all my friends apparently. So I don't get traffic anymore. Which doesn't sadden me one bit. I just wrote something about wanting them to kill the frontpage as we know it. And link people to topics that people are interested in. kind of like what wordpress does. Instead of reading so many blogs about Xanga and etc. You just don't see blogs on WP about WP.

  • wow, these are great ideas... for me, i guess Xanga just have to focus more on its strength and stop diversifying... strengthen the stronger points before going into other stuff... i agree, the "celebrity" xangans should be promoted, but just as much are the least known xangans who are just as active, especially on posting but perhaps not so in interacting with others...

ever looked at the settings page? until now its still under construction, which makes me think if xanga's administrators are really present here... or if you have queries, we would merely be forwarded to questions of other xangans rather than give us the opportunity to really talk with someone from xanga itself... its so frustrating...
