Getting Your Face Off the Internet (Rated C)
Not much to say here. Decided to drop this link about Erin Andrews, the female broadcaster at ESPN whose naked video, taken without her permission, is all over the Internet: http://www.marieclaire.com/celebrity-lifestyle/celebrities/erin-andrews-interview?click=pp She talks about how haunted she felt over it all.
It has been long enough, I think, to share this story. There was a Xangan friend of mine whose ex came on here and posted photos and videos of her in various sexual interactions. He used a name similar to her real name and this was during the time when Xanga had sections for photos and video. There was a very good chance her friends would see it. I tried to help her on what to do. It was a scary time, and a big reason why I'm fairly prudish about people posting certain types of personal sexual content on the Xangas.
It's a serious problem in our society that I'm afraid hasn't yet gotten enough attention. Look at the kid who killed himself at Rutgers, for example. He was recorded without knowing he was. Also, photo and video sites/programs such as Photobucket and Skype are more hackable than you might think, I might add. Most sexual violations end after the act. But having sexual video or photos of you all over the Internet makes the sexual assualt fresh each day. There is a particular cruelty to it that is vicious.
I don't know...do you think it will ever improve? Do you think major search engines will voluntarily block content that names you and is used to shame you, for example? I'd like to think it would. But I have little optimism. Talking to younger kids, they're just used to things being this way. I remember talking to one kid who said "Oh, we just laugh about it, what can you do?"
It's not quite related, but the Rutgers incident reminds me, webcams pose a separate issue. You may be helped by reading http://webcamsafety.org/ . It explains what to do if you are blackmailed or attacked, and how to be careful of online predators. I would guess that someone who needs that link will read this, so there you go.

Just don't film yourself doing any of that stuff, or allow yourself to be? Or don't do that stuff at all with anyone you aren't married to
Indeed.
Good PSA. There is an increasing fascination with recording one's sexual exploits and putting them out for all to see. The problem isn't going away, and will only get worse. innocence lost is paradise lost.

Thanks for this.
scary stuff.
i think that in addition to refraining from taking photographs/videos with sexual content, the internet should attempt to make stronger filters for such pictures.
Wow, that is terrible. That happened on xanga? Wow.
Thanks for the prayers by the way. I'm here for one more week , are you free at all? Would be great to meet you.
Poor girl, hopefully she wont let photos happen next time!
Be safe--don't let people take pictures of you in compromising situations. A picture is worth a thousand words, and those words don't necessarily need to be true. Andrews had some good stuff in that article; blocking the peephole on a hotel room door is a good idea. For me, I don't let people take pictures of me at parties unless it's head and shoulders only, I don't look drunk, and I make sure I'm not holding a drink. And I'm of age. I'm all about not looking like an idiot on the internet.
