  • Fat and Slutty in America

I've gone up and down a lot in my weight this year. As a result, I've gotten a lot of amusing and annoying comments from family, friends, colleagues, you name it. Everyone has an opinion on how much I have or have not gotten fatter, what I'm eating, how athletic I am or am not. It's kind of funny...except when it's not. Let's just say I'm glad I am a man in my 30's, not a woman in her teens, and that my sense of self-worth is not based on my looks. (It's based on much more stable factors such as my ability in Tetris and my ability to beat strangers in random sports. TOTALLY MORE LOGICALISH, take that, dumbos!). I got a slight look at what it must be like to be judged and considered merely on one's appearance, and it was frightening. (Cue chorus of "Welcome to my world, Greekboy" from female readers).

Anyway, this got me thinking of the differences between food and sex in America, a mere difference of orifices, if you will (smirk*). We tend to be very willing and able to judge people based on their food choices and weight.  But let's suppose instead that my crimes against the standard were sexual, rather than food-oriented, and that people knew. (Yes, people do figure it out, despite how discreet we think we are). Would people correct as much then? Would anyone say "Ok, stop, you've had enough. No more one-night stands" or "Ah, I see you've put on a little sluttiness there" in a critical tone?

I'm not trying to say that we'd be completely better off if the judgmental attitude so many people have towards food was transferred towards sex, or if we all stuffed our faces with no interference. But once again I find myself annoyed at the hypocrisy of how we handle food and sex in America. As a fired-up Jesus Christ once said, "Stop judging by mere appearances and make a right judgment."

*As you can guess, several off-color wordplays died a terrible death in the editing room. The things I do to keep my blog PG!

  • Fat chicks need loving too?

  • Write an R rated blog!!!

  • Well, I guess I DID get accused of eating your cheeseburger...

  • I think it's very hypocritical to see people very judgmental about weight/eating/appearance but then expect not to be judged for their sexual behavior after they judge others for their weight...

  • "Everyone has an opinion....It's kid of funny...except when it's not."

    CLASSIC
""Ah, I see you've put on a little sluttiness there" in a critical tone? "
I recently saw 2 chicks from high school that looked like since I last seen them they went through MILES of cock. I wasn't surprised, but daaaammmnnnn.

  • well, since I've become braindamaged, I can't stop eating and it's really bad, but I've always had a problem.  In other countries, they stop me from eating, yes.  They refuse me business.  By the way, there are sex laws in America.  They go around giving people brain damage for even thinking about other people.  Oh well.  I can't control that.  My brain overrides everything and the more they try to edit, the more I bond with him.  Rasputina has seen better days. Oddly enough, he is my only hope so whatever.  I'd put my lil hand out there now stupidly mostly because I'm retarded and really need some help.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDl9ZMfj6aE  They tried turning me into the whore but that didn't work nto that being a shooka is a bad profession.  Overall, I hate America.  Wouldn't they just cut my finger off so that I didn't have that problem?  It burns.  that's a trick.

  • I'm going to have to join in the chorus! Welcome, Greekboy!

  • Yep, this is where we live.
I believe I pulsed that not long ago, "Funny how people who are up in arms about slut-shaming feel perfectly justified in weight-shaming."

  • I feel like there should be a photo of bacon wrapped scallops in this post to add a certain credibility to it.

  • I can definitely see what you're saying.

  • " I see you've put on a little sluttiness there". Hahaha
    I like your thoughts, J.

I've struggled up and down with weight also last few years so I hear you there too -- but again, thankful my self worth not based on opinions of me.

Hope you enjoyed your trip. Look forward to posts on it.

  • Well, guess what?  Bryne and I had several discussions on the parallels between food and sex -- mainly, the undeniable fact that "women : food attitudes = men : sex attitudes" in ways most people don't even want to think about.  So, the quote "Oh, I'll just allow myself this one little *chuckle* sinful indulgence" could be either from a woman lifting a gooey chocolate-with-chocolate-icing brownie, or a man eyeing up a halter top and pair of short shorts (and, of course, their contents).  And which side of that is gross to you, probably depends on your chromosomes...

  • Food for thought?? Sorry, couldn't help myself.

  • "if we all stuffed our faces with vagina"ohhh haha sorry did I add vagina in there..sorry....

good point....i'm a firm believer of..happy people don't judge or talk badly about others...so must be the miserable peeps talking shit!

  • people DO judge you by your sluttiness, its just not as obvious as your panniculus. (not YOU per se, thats more of a general "everyone" type "you")

  • Good Points, I have nothing to add other than I call you John the Greek not Greek-boy lol.

  • Good post!

Everyone judges others, whether it is about food intake, sexual partners (amount, choice of, and/or lack of), job, hairstyle, clothing, etc. I guess mostly females do the judging...

  • I think that the only difference is that people will criticize you about your weight to your face, but criticisms about sex are often behind your back. This might be more true for women than for men though. (A man who have lots of sex is 'the man!' Right?) I can't tell you how often I hear females criticize another female by saying "She is such a slut!" or "She has slept with X number of men. Can you believe that? What a whore!" Odds are they wouldn't go up to the woman in question and call her a whore to her face though though. However if said woman gained a few pounds they might offer to take her to the gym with them.

  • Sin is sin... Gluttony, as well as sexual immorality, is a sin. I recently heard a sermon on Ezekiel 16, which was particularly focused on verses 49-50. (God is rebuking and warning Judah (the Southern Kingdom) here, as He refers to Israel (the Northern Kingdom) as "her sister Sodom.")

49  Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. 50  They were haughty and did an abomination before me. So I removed them, when I saw it. 51  Samaria has not committed half your sins. You have committed more abominations than they, and have made your sisters appear righteous by all the abominations that you have committed. 52  Bear your disgrace, you also, for you have intervened on behalf of your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. So be ashamed, you also, and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

  • Yep, now you know what it's like to be a young female. Judged for everything she does, in terms of sexuality, what she eats, wears, studies, etc. anything somewhat related to those things... it sucks. And I second the requests to write an R-rated blog :P
