  • "Umbrella" lyrics sung by Rihanna foretell her story?

Below are the lyrics to "Umbrella" by Rihanna. I bolded the ironic parts that seem to speak to her relationship with Chris Brown. Shiny cars, darkness, and hard hand indeed!

    Jay-Z:
    Ahuh ahuh (yea Rihanna)
Ahuh ahuh (good girl gone bad)
    Ahuh ahuh (take three... action)
    Ahuh ahuh
    No clouds in my storms
Let it rain, I hydroplane in the bank (Rihanna: eh eh)
Comin' down with the Dow Jones
When the clouds come we gone
    We Rocafella (Rihanna: eh eh)
    She fly higher than weather
    And she rocks it better
    You know me
An anticipation for precipitation, stacks chips for the rainy day (Rihanna: eh eh)
Jay, rain man is back with little Miss Sunshine
    Rihanna where you at?

    [Verse 1]
You had my heart, and we'll never be world apart
Maybe in magazines, but you'll still be my star
Baby cause in the dark, we can't see shiny cars
And that's when you need me there

    With you I'll always share
    Because

    [Chorus]

    [Verse 2]
Fancy things, will never come in between
You're part of my entity, here for infinity
When the world has took it's part
When the world has dealt it's cards
If the hand is hard, together we'll mend your heart
    Because

    [Chorus]
    [Bridge]
You can run into my arms
    It's okay don't be alarmed
    (Come into me)
(There's no distance in between our love)

So go on and let the rain pour
I'll be all you need and more
    Because...

    [Chorus]
    When the sun shine
    We'll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be your friend
Took an oath imma stick it out 'till the end

Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella
    (Ella ella eh eh eh)
    Under my umbrella
    (Ella ella eh eh eh)
    Under my umbrella
    (Ella ella eh eh eh)
    Under my umbrella
(Ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh)
    etc.

  • I hate that song, but you make a good point.

  • The message: When times get hard you can rely on her to be there for you.

Hm, that's more or less the premises of most pop love songs isn't it? It's unfortunate the media is shoving this down our throats - as if it's the first case of domestic violence to occur.

  • LMAO!!! I never realized that. It's a darn shame!!!

  • A lot of her songs reminds me of her relationship...rehab sounds a bit like her life...and someone told me she wrote a song called emergency room.

  • @wherethefishlives - The hypocrisy of everyone over-reacting to this after putting up with years of other singers talking about smacking around and mistreating their "hos" and bitches" is ridiculous. I had a post set on that but decided to bury it for the time being. Still feel like I should keep it classy on here (shrug) some other time.

  • i thought about this the other day since I do a cover of umbrella and I had some similar thoughts. it's really sad and I expected it being that I've worked with battered women and the rumor was that this wasn't the first time he had abused her. it won't be the last. why do women do this?

  • @GreekPhysique - I wouldn't say people have been "putting up" with the vulgarity of rap lyrics, as it has been a debatable topic for years. Besides, calling a woman a ho or a bitch is much different than physically striking her.

  • never understand some people

  • hmm, interesting...
she didn't write that song though.

  • poor lil confused girl.. someone needs to help her..

  • @wherethefishlives - it isn't that calling your girl a "ho" or a "bitch" is the same as smacking her around.. it's the concept behind both. It's disrespectful both ways in that your lady is something invaluable something special. She has your heart, your love, your happiness (so to speak) held within her hands.. A relationship should be dealt with the utmost delicacy.. She should respect you.. you should value her..
But (especially through music) the relationship is demeaned and treated as disposable.. Anyway.. lol.. I can't even remember where I was going with that!

  • I have not been following this story beyond glancing at the tabloid headlines. I don't know if the abuser will really stop after that first blow has been struck. I worked with a girl whose live-in boyfriend punched her in the face in front of their son... and she forgave him. They have another child now. I have not talked to her in a few years and I have always wondered if he ever hit her again. I think once that line is crossed, it's hard to draw it again. Maybe impossible.

  • Are you an english major?

  • @PaperLion99 - No, just a major in failure :-p kidding. I do like English a lot and always did well in it, but never majored in it or anything.

  • Yeah, long distance relationships are hard..Blah.

    Interesting post though.

  • @GreekPhysique - Omg, you just made the best point ever: 'The hypocrisy of everyone over-reacting to
this after putting up with years of other singers talking about
smacking around and mistreating their "hos" and bitches" is ridiculous.'

I never looked at it in that way.

  • ha.. this was one of me and my husband's many songs so funny you should say that. I guess I can see how you'd take it that way.. of course when she said "if the hand is hard" it meant if the hand of cards that life dealt them wasn't easy.. which is how me and my husband mean the song... but yeah I guess for her it did turn out that way.

  • I did hear on the radio that the've now broken up though and that she is dating a new guy. No idea if that's true or not but that's what the latest rumor is. So maybe she's not going to "Stick it out till the end"
