  • Serious Post (Promise!) on Perils of Popularity

The great and mighty KBEAR!!!! decided to bully me into a blog post on an article she sent me. Fearing a mauling, I immediately fled to my keyboard. Besides, the topic is on one of my favorite topics, teenage girls** Internet popularity.

Basically, this girl who did webcam shows and hung out on Myspace was visited by a hacker. He hacked into her Myspace and webcam channel and threatened not to give them back unless she'd bake him a peach cobbler like his mother would when he was a wee lad. No! Because this is the Internet, he couldn't be original, so of course he begged for her to send nasty photos. (Why are hackers, trolls, and extorters so unoriginal?!). It's a clear case of extortion, and the police tracked him down and arrested him. Full details in this article. Note: the article contains a somewhat sexy photo and some harsh language, so discretion is advised. Here.

This article unfortunately reminds me of one of my beefs with the Internet of late. There is serious blowback to being an "out there" Internet personality. More and more, it seems like the Internet is dividing into a segment of MASTERS "leaders" who produce the content, do the shows, and entertain people, and SLAVES "followers" who watch the leaders, stalk the leaders, and basically spend their lives sitting around waiting to be entertained by another leader. But the sad part is, being a leader can be very dangerous. They end up becoming performance artists, or they become threatened by their more extreme followers. I intentionally curb my popularity on here (don't blog daily, for example) just to prevent it from happening to me. (I AM SO COOL THAT IF MY TRUE COOLNESS WAS EVER REVEALED, READERS WOULD BE STRUCK BLIND. BUT THEY WOULD THANK ME BECAUSE THE LAST THING THEY WOULD EVER SEE IS MY WORDS OR FACE (takes medication) err, I mean, I just try not to be too much of a leader or too much of a follower.

One of the reasons I have stuck by Xanga is that it agrees with my own personal philosophy that each one of us can create and be creative, because God created us in his image (or, if you prefer, Scientus the God of Science caused high-speed collisions between gaseous particles that reverberated back and forth until suddenly producing Michael Jackson circa 1983). I know at times that it's tempting to sit on the sideline and just read/comment on what others write. I know it can be daunting to see someone's post and think "I could never do something that cool!" But look, I came here with no obvious writing gifts or talents, and I somehow have carved out a niche for myself and demonstrated some competence. I think many of you can do the same. Don't be a "follower". Don't be a passive, creepy absorber of entertainment. Strive to create just as much as you absorb. No, I'm not saying ALL followers are creepy stalkers...it's just you many people just don't have much time, I understand. But I'm talking about a MINDSET that one should adopt. Make sense? **I've "discovered" the strike-through button on my Xanga. Be very afraid.

  • hahhaa. you entertain me much. but have no fear, i will not be a-stalkin'. lol.

  • I love the strike-through button.

  • That strike through button is awesome huh? I don't use it enough!

  • oh. I AM stalking...

  • i love the teenage girl reference...i don't know why but it struck my funnybone...i can't stop laughing.. ah. overtired.

p.s. I never rec anymore. consider yourself privOlaged.

  • *is very afraid...*

  • Dear Greek,

There needs to be readers in order for writers to proliferate.

    Or something like that.

I've been attempting to find internet fame for a decade now, and I think I create fantastic content I never get tired of reading/viewing/seeing. However, I think I'd be far more popular if my profile pic looked more like the link you provided for the gal who was hacked.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't want to be hacked, or stalked, so perhaps it's best to be a little less "popular."

  • I'm always afraid. :P

there's also a ridiculous number of P's in your title. alliteration ftw?

  • ahhhh darn........ and I had almost perfected my stalking techniques.... guess I better start working more on my writing skills... sighhhhhhhhhhh

  • "But the sad part is, being a leader can be very dangerous. They end up becoming performance artists, or they become threatened by their more extreme followers."

not to minimize what i'm sure was an upsetting experience for this girl, but it usually helps if you don't post skank-ass pictures of yourself and peddle your sexuality for popularity.

i applaud the general gist of your post, though! would also posit that there's a place for readers who contribute i.e. those who may not necessarily blog prolifically themselves but do take time for thoughtful consideration of, dialogue with, contribution to, etc. others

  • "Neither a borrower nor a lender be...."
or as my philosophy is "Neither a leader nor a follower be....just be tee."
    Nope.
    I don't do bandwagons.
If a topic sounds interesting, I may read.  I tend to avoid going to a site just because someone is either popular or not.
That....does not impress me...in  the slightest.

  • Yea!  You rock!  I knew you'd be nicer than I would have been.  lol  I was thinking of writing something more like, "No one deserves a stalker, but...if you put yourself out there as a/an...(INSERT: word for girl who is unashamedly sexual online or in the real world)...then you're asking for trouble; if you don't know better in this day and age, then it sucks to be you."  lol

  • I, too, love the alliteration in your title :)

    Secondly, wow...gotta love the strike-through button :D

Haha but seriously, I can't agree more.  I'll definitely be checking those sites out, though...I feel like I've lost "it" in the past year or so; hoping to get it back.

  • I caught myself chuckling at your strike-throughs :)

I have maybe half a dozen people on xanga I visit regularly.  None are really 'popular', but I enjoy reading and we often exchange thoughts.  Then there are some - including you - that always have very thought-provoking posts that I can't help but visit on occasion.

I generally write very personal entries.  Lately a few have been featured and I've been criticised.  I agree, its better to be slightly in the shadows, where you feel no pressure to be anything other than yourself...

  • @Kontzicles - @echois23 - Now, now, I do give out a limited # of stalking licenses for people who I actually want to get to know me better :-p

    @StewieIsMyHero - @iStephanieMarie -@torontobabyblue - It's the best!

@baldmike2004 - Unfortunately Internet traffic rarely accrues to those of us who are not assertive, funny, aggressively opinionated men or hot women. It's too bad, but it's mostly true.

@closetblogophiliac - I've been on so-called webcam sites before--the clientele is rude and obnoxious. It is easy to judge the girls, but unfortunately the truth is the audience is much worse in most such settings. (I refer of course to social webchat sites that have strict PG-13-ish guidelines). Still, I see your point.

@Carolina17 - Accidental, I must say--I must have been on a roll with the letter "P". I do love alliteration, though!

@sonnigenmai - It is rather odd to be featured, but you do write well--I loved your story about the student that one time. Don't worry, soon enough most of your readers will leave you alone. It's just when a story is featured that the real nonsense occurs.

  • @GreekPhysique - The one about Katie?  Thank you :)   I have one I'm working on that I will put out probably Thursday or Friday you might like too; I just haven't had the time to finish it.  I hope you are right and they back off.  I miss just writing about a special moment of my day for my own memory without people saying I am too dependant on my boyfriend or too silly or too this or too that.  I'll stop complaining now lol, but I truly do love your posts, your honesty.

  • @GreekPhysique - - It sounds like fun. I've been the victim of a stalker I guess it's time to see it from the other side I suppose. here is my first effort..... I was shocked to learn you are actually a hot chick.... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8937902158798518908

  • @echois23 - What are you talking about? I'm the muscular guy later in the video, ha. I've tried to keep my bodybuilding past quiet on here--I don't want to be overwhelmed by my fans. :-p

  • @GreekPhysique - ahhhh so sorry but then we stalkers are all about revealing those secrets in the past...... Bwah ha ha ha

  • That picture was in no way "sexy". You lied to me.

  • i'd comment more, but you have profile pics turned off and no one reads anyone elses comments unless they have a really hot/cool/snarky picture.

  • Our younger brother should be arriving by FedEx any minute now.  Eat the peach cobbler he brings, or you shall rue the consequences.

  • Internet popularity gets out of hand.

I like the strike-out button. Use it wisely.

  • Happy Birthday GP!

  • I used to do 45 weekly when I was younger, now that I got my shins fixed it'll be nothing. 6
miles 5 days a week is easy peasy. I run competitively in school and I'm our captain, it's required mileage for me. But I agree, I have to work my way into it as to not get injured and I do.

"Strive to create just as much as you absorb." That's brilliant!

    Love always

  • @brutalnotfutile - Ah! ok, I didn't realize you had competitive experience. That's different then. It's just that too many beginning runners pile it on over-optimistically and then get injured and have to stop. Run those 30 miles then!

  • I never thought of seeking help for my blogging...hmm.

  • im the creepy, passive absorber of your entertainment! but u dont do a very good job of entertaining. there's not enough ass pictures.
