Interview from Levanna
THE Levanna of gun-firing, rhyme-wielding, smarty-pants wearing fame was giving out a "free interview" on her site, and I raced to be first to advantage of this opportunity. FIRST?!!?!, commenter riffraff, take that! Ready....GO!
Levanna: Let's be honest - have you ever listened to rap ... and ENJOYED it?
Confession time...I like rap, and would like it even more if it was less materialistic or knew more artists who didn't clash so badly with my Christian beliefs. No, you won't find any Tupac under my table. I actually buy very little of it, probably because I don't know who the more socially conscious artists are. But you have to understand, I grew up as an outsider to white suburban community, and was frustrated by the closeminded culture. I also used to like poetry and making rhymes. So the idea that one could rap about their beefs with the world and make it musical with beats to drive the message into your heart was an easy sell to me.
Levanna: Calvinism. Go.
Whenever I think about Calvinism, I see in my mind's eye a European wearing a beret and sipping his coffee. He tells me "Shame about all those people going to hell, laddie, but God's sovereign, you know. Lucky us, right? Fancy a muffin?" and then takes another sip. There are many logical, witty, kind people who believe in Calvinism. There are many very good reasons to believe in Calvinism. But there's a certain heartless determinism about it that makes me recoil on contact.
Levanna: What's your least favorite cereal? and Why?
There's nothing cheery about Cheerios, and I'm tired of waiting forlornly for a touch of honey from my cereal when I could do just as well by opening a REAL bottle of honey and pouring it on my cereal. That bee may be outside the box, but my taste buds report he never did make a trip inside. And for the love of grain, what nut thought "Corn Flakes" sounded delicious? I've dug too many flakes of corn out of my teeth while eating corn on the cob to be excited about that name.
Levanna: Who's your favorite author? I got stuck with this one, so you are too.
Villianness! Treachery! :-p
Oh dear, this is going to be hard. For most underrated, it's Lloyd Alexander and his Prydain Chronicles. He's sadly overshadowed because the Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings series overlap with him. But I know better; I will always be Taran, although I hope one day to no longer be Wanderer. Ok, ok, let me choose O. Henry once more. I've read every last one of his short stories. And for an oddball choice--Luke in the New Testament is not appreciated enough. I love how he sees so many things and has such style in his writing.Levanna: Do you think birth order impacted your childhood?
Being the first of three brothers meant that I grew up feeling a strong sense of responsibility to those weaker and younger than I. It also meant that at times I approached matters as a parent instead of a peer, and tended to over-advise and analyze. However, without being a first-born, I don't think I would have ever become a leader and would have lost much of the initiative I have today. I also lucked out to have two great brothers. I only wish I had tried to learn more from them; there was much I could have learned about myself and my family if only I had paid more attention to how my younger siblings lived. To a certain extent, I believe your immediate family IS you, if you can only listen closely enough. (I was in a very close-knit family, so take that statement with the necessary antidote).
Now, I will pick at least one of you for an interview next.
1 -- Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 -- I will respond asking you five questions.
3 -- You'll update your blog with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 -- You'll include this explanation.
5 -- You'll ask other people who want to be interviewed five questions.

ooh, I still haven't done this yet. me me me!!
Great answers!
I really learned more about you I think. Your description of Calvinism is just spot on.
@Levanna - I tried not to filter in my answers
I usually do on here, because otherwise people know everything about me in about 2 seconds, ha.
I really enjoyed the question on birth order (that's one of my favorite psychological areas.) Ever tried reading, The Firstborn Advantage, by Dr. Kevin Leman? Though... it sounds like you might've already discovered how to work your birth order successfully. However, if you're looking for a good book on that topic... check it out!
"I like rap, and would like it even more if it was less materialistic or
knew more artists who didn't clash so badly with my Christian beliefs."
and then Christian rap is ridiculous 90% of the time.
love always
@brutalnotfutile - Ha, you understand my dilemma, then. Clearly, my only way out is to become a rapper myself. Is the world ready for 50-Drachma, the Greek rapper? haha.
Great interview. I'll sign up if you want to send me some questions.
@Levanna - I love it that you asked the Calvinist question. Did you ever make your decision on that? Did I give you that video link about it?
@Tom@revelife - You never did send the Calvinist links... Basically, it's ended up that we're leaving the congregation over it."Or, converting to 'visitor status'." "We're "semi-Pelagian heretics" apparently. It's not that WE couldn't live with the leadership having some Calvinist leanings, it's that we simply are more concerned with feeding the poor and visiting the prisoners and the leadership wants us to agree fully with Calvinism.
Do you want me, or Greek to send you the questions?
@Levanna - You can both send questions.
I'll give you the Calvinist links here. I'm sorry to hear things are working out that way. I really do agree with the Calvinist theology. But, it's not important enough for me to leave my church over it. My church is Wesleyan Arminian, I have discussed my views with my associate pastor. He gave me the churches official stance, and his personal one. They were both interesting but I still stick to the Calvinist view.
http://www.marshillchurch.org/media/religionsaves/predestination <-- This is the initial sermon/teaching on it.
http://www.marshillchurch.org/media/religionsaves/predestination/live-q-a <-- The Q & A, where Pastor Mark gives the best illustration I've heard on the subject.
My thoughts on the matter are that the Calvinist view gives God His place as absolutely sovereign, all knowing, and good. While showing man to be totally depraved and thus salvation glorifies God. I think the opposing view in some ways makes man look less than totally depraved and takes away some of God's sovereignty.
@GreekPhysique - 50-Drachma, I love it!
@GreekPhysique - ahaha please and thankyou
Haha, I love your gut response to Calvinism. That's amazing...and I have felt the same way since I understood the concept (the recoil-action).
this is a super cool blog idea!
@GreekPhysique - Oh Greek...GREEK! Shame on you!! We sip whiskey just as much as
coffee while we are condemning people! We heartless determinists have
to have something with which to make merry...seeing as how everything
is so gloomy and all the time.
Wow answering any five questions... really answering anything you might ask.... too scary for me... not sure I am ready to be quite that open with you...... maybe someday.....
As for Calvanism, I think you are right on. That certain "heartless determinism" seems to be the No. 1 reason most people don't hold to Calvan's views. Regardless of whether or not Calvan is correct, his followers seem to have a unique ability to repulse the masses.
I want to be interviewed... I think... Maybe.
Ya know... if you still haven't decided who to interview... why not me? <g> I'm not going to sell myself ... but hey, if you're inclined, ya know where to find me.
I definitely can relate to the part about over-analyzing and being more of a parent than a peer. A fantastic interview!
RYC: OH NOES! THE APOCALYPSE HAS BEGUN!
@Carolina17 - @texasbananas - @Passionflwr86 - I would be happy to interview you three. I don't know that much about any of you, so I would enjoy it.
Just give me a little time, I will be rather busy until Friday.
After much thought and consideration, I thought I would offer myself as interview candidate. It'll be fun, right?
@echois23 - Interesting, in retrospect. I remember now quite how guarded you were.
@GreekPhysique - Yes, it is interesting but true. I still wouldn't do it publicly but would be more likely to do it just for you.
@GreekPhysique - and I had forgotten how very much I loved your answer to Calvinism....
