Xanga Teen Writing Contest: $100 Prize!
Ok, that's enough about how wonderful my brother is. I'm getting jealous at the marriage proposals now, ha. He'll have to get his own blog up and running again before he can have any more! But I dearly appreciate him, and it was fun to do.
I'm announcing a special Xanga-wide contest for teenagers only. You must have been 19 years of age or younger as of January 1st, 2009. Too often, Xanga teens, people act as if you don't know much about life. They pretend that it is impossible to have experience and learn life lessons without being older. That's ridiculous! I've worked with teens and know how observant they are. I know you've learned many life lessons already at your young age. I want to know one of them for this contest. What important lesson have you learned so far that you'll remember and use for the rest of your days? Just focus on ONE main lesson.
Entries can be any length you desire, in any format you desire. Put up a picture of scars on your knee to tell us how you learned an important life lesson on when you were ready to ride your motorcycle and what it taught you about taking risks. Or write a poem/rap about it. Write a 2500 word essay telling us a huge story about how your prom taught you a life lesson, and surprise us with an unusual ending. Or give us a short but sweet life lesson like "Life is short; memories are long" and leave us to ponder what that means and how you learned it. I'm giving you total freedom here. I would of course add that entries that, for example, advocate violence towards the innocent or what not have no chance of winning and will not get any publicity from me--that's a "duh" rule, but I should state that.
The main rule is that entries must be turned in by May 1st, 2009. The SOONER the BETTER! If you wait too long, I may not have time to read your post. Top 5 entries get their own post on here, where I copy the life lesson on here so that others can read it and link to your site. So by entering this contest, you give me permission to recommend and post your entries; if that's a problem, let me know and maybe we'll work something out.
If I get enough high-quality entries, Winner gets $100. Runner-up gets $25. Prizes are guaranteed to be at least $25 and $10, respectively. Because of the cash prize, I'll make sure to verify that you have been a Xangan since April 14, 2009. Adults, don't be trying to rip off the kids for this prize! ha.
Ok, teens, get to work!
Possible judges will be announced shortly. Send me your post link via message, or post it in the comments. If you have friends lock, just add me as a friend. And if necessary, get your parents' permission to join. That's it!

SD says cool!
Will you marry me??
does that make you feel better
Are you sure you know what you're doing? A teen writing contest...*terrifying 4-H flashback montage- Sits straight up in bed screaming*
ooh, this sounds really cool!!
)
aweee crappers. im 22
sweeeeet, this can go towards my tuition.
@Made2sing4Jesus - SD? o.O
Good idea!! I'll be sure to get writing =D
You better make sure to timestamp this so I remember to turn it in!!! =D
this is SOOOO agist. *harumph says the curmudgeon*
@thecommonfate - Oh I know! One time we went to the 4h UIL! I had to be a radio announcer & sound cool talking about COWS!!!!!!
Tempting.
Whoah. I should start writing now, I could use that...
But the question - how will it be payed out?
I'm 23. Can I submit something from my early days as a xangan? I was 17 then....
Very cool.
@ScreamingYourSecrets - Probably two pre-paid American Express credit cards with $50 each on them.
Whoa... what a great idea, Greek. I'm RECing to get the word out...
no
WAY.
Very interesting. *puts on thinking cap*
im in (if i can keep up with my homework in time for the ap tests). im 17, turning 18 in july.
So this is kinda like a personal essay, except even more informal, right?
I am so there. I think. I'll try anywho!
As a high school teacher I see a lot of teens and am always amazed at how smart about the world they can be. I was blown away in my sociology class when kids were talking about social issues that they valued, the media portrays teens like they just don't care, but I do think they do.
where are u getting the money for this??? and why???? lol
Where's part 2 of the weak and the strong????
@SerenaDante - SD is my daughter.
A’s, 4.0’s, 2400’s, is that it?
Too blind to see the board.Spend less time not doing anything.
@yourkbear - It's coming, promise
I just had this idea waiting for too long. I never have a problem coming up with ideas. Remind me if I forget!
That's very cool, I'm glad you're doing this.
@Made2sing4Jesus - Those are my initials too =D!!!
thanks a lot for your comment!!
yeah I prefer working in small goals! I like to have it set up and written down, it helps me keep it in perspective hehe
take care xox
@Made2sing4Jesus - @SerenaDante - Ladies, ladies, you can share the SD initials! :-p just teasing. It is funny how what one person intends to be X becomes Y to someone else, and the truth is that both X and Y are true, in their own way.
@GreekPhysique - LOL I know what you mean..like My Dan. I am having to clear that up all the time.
yay!
Seriously? You are getting jealous of your brother? That is hilarious!
I also wanted to say how cool it is what you are doing. I'll have to see if any of my little ducks are up to the challenge. (My little ducks refers to my eighth grade class. I call them that to embarrass them. Yes, I am horrible.)
just for teen?
when will the prehistoric cavemen's version of the contest will be held?
Awesomeeee : )
Seems like a great proposal to me!
That is a great idea!
Wow. Can I join in?
I'M IN! (and i'm in legal age limits
)
Cool beans.
http://wednesdaywannabe.xanga.com/weblog - April 6th entry - yet untitled
I'm still 19 - it's good for something!
Wednesdaywannabe
Is it open to people not in America?
Sweet. I'll give this a shot.
April 16th, not 6th
Is this open to the States only?
That is pretty cool. Im excited to see what kind of entries you get.
awesome!
I just join Xanga yesterday and would love to enter this comp but you said they have to be and Xangar since the 14th. Would I still be able to enter though coz I really want to.
that is a good idea. I can't enter, but it still sounds cool.
Thanks! (I really could go without the money, though). Finally, adults give us kids a chance.
sounds good!
I'm 21 so I can't participate, but I think it's pretty incredible that you're putting this opportunity out there for young writers.
Are you paying for this out of your own pocket?
This does sound interesting. How are you going to judge the entries? On style of writing, subject, or overall impact?
This is awesome.
Cool!
Hi,
I've posted one, it's the latest blog on my page.
Hope you like it!
Can we use posts that have already been written? I am currently 18 so age is not the issue, I just have a post that I particularly liked that would fit this criteria.
Cool!
Pretty cool idea
cool!
wish I could apply though
Sounds like a fun contest! Need a judge?
I WILL ALSO GIVE OUT 10$ STARBUCKS GIFT CARD AND 2 AMC MOVIE TICKETS TO 4TH AND 5TH PLACE! GOOD LUCK, GUYS!
btw, im in the early 20s but i look like 19. can i join with my esl writting level?
Just turned 19 in March, I still qualify.
Great idea!
What?! I just turned 20. -_-
I'm tempted, let me see if I can pull epicness out of my ass
omg AWESOMEEE
I would so enter, except I don't think I'm a terribly good writer. Haha.
Hmm, well, I have friends lock on- Would that interfere?
Does the story have to have a happy ending?
How would you send the money to the winner?
-confusion-
Can I enter without wanting the money? I just want to ...win, not win money.
I'm in!!
Haha I'm TOTALLY in if I can fit it in between SAT and AP
This doesn't sound bad at all!
I love when after a couple of days of tiring work I read something interesting in my subscriptions. Yes, I will enter for the heck of it, sounds fun. ^_^
I can't wait to read your selections.
You know, you should make a post: How to Instantly Get Front Page of Xanga, because I think that was the fastest one of your entries has gotten there.
Umm... I suppose I leave the link here:
I'm Almost Not A Teen =)
<a href="
Love someone while you have them, because in an instant, they could be gone. Thats what we were always told growing up, right? I never followed this cliche saying, until I learned that i had to, or it was going to break my heart. Reality quickly snapped into its place about nine years ago on May 10th, 2000. Things seemed to be perfect, I was only seven years old, and what seven year old little girl has anything to worry about, especially nine days before her birthday? I wokeup that morning to crying, and yelling, and in panic ran out into my kitchen, with my brother trailing behind me. As soon as my parents saw us, they asked us to go to our rooms until they were ready to talk. All i remember after that was hurting hearts, and watery eyes. I soon came to find out, that one of my many brothers, had killed himself, and not only that but killed someone else also. As my mother grew distant, my father grew relentless, and my attendance to ballet and school grew farther apart, my whole world came crashing down, but i didnt care about any of it. The only thing I cared about was if my last words to my brother were helping words, or hurting words, as my mom used to put it. From that day on I promised myself that no matter what, I would never go to bed fighting, never hurt someone then let them out of myself, and always be the first to apologize to my loved ones.
I like this idea.
I put my own lesson up on xanga after I read this... here's the link:
The Detention Rap
hope y'all like it!
I've learned that asking questions now, is how you will figure things out in the future. Lots and lots of questions.
Awesome!
This is wicked!
Hmmm, it is a thought...
Sounds like a great idea to me. I wish I would have thought of it. Hope it goes well.
oh hey. this is cute, i might try.
I FORGOT I am twenty!! Arg! I would have beat all the kiddies at this.
I married an abusive, homosexual coke addict for seven months, and he was planning to have me killed by month nine, but I called the police after his parents held me hostage for four days after he beat the living day lights out of me. Lesson learned: Don't marry a salesman. Sheesh. Couldn't you bump the age to twenty? Twenty seems teenish to me!
Might try. But is this open to non-American residents as well? =/
Dammit. I just turned 20.
Yay! I just turned 19 which means I am still in the age limits!!! Woohoo! I'm sure there is some life lesson I've learned somewhere that I could write about....
How do I submit my entry?
So 2500 words is set in stone?
@UnpredictableIdentity - it's in the entry -
"Send me your post link via message, or post it in the comments. If you
have friends lock, just add me as a friend"
KATHY NGUYEN! remember that name ok? cause i'm gonna win the 100 and save up for college. When do I send the essay when i'm done?? ^_____^!?
can we submit more than one entry?
i have a poem, a play, and a narrative that i wrote this year...
don't make me have to choose just one!
ooh! I wanna try!
I'm ineligible, but I'd love to see something good come of this, so I'm recommending it.
what am i supposed to say here?
in this empty blank where my words should appear.
my heart burdens something that i know not of.
something that crushes it daily,
with a pain of sweet rememberance.
remembering what?
i'm not sure.
there's things i want to blame,
but truth be told;
it's never the reason for the tears.
a pain that falls from my eyes,
cleansing my heart and soul.
i want to run, until it's gone.
but where would i go?
i know not what i think of,
i know not what i miss,
and when it will disappear.
will it ever?
i live in fear.
i wish to dream of it,
to think of it,
to see it,
but i can't, not now;
nor ever.
my heart has a burden upon it,
of what?
i'm not sure.
but one day, i know;
things shall slip into place,
and i will remember it.
it that i know not of.
think what you'd like of it. yaya. hope you enjoy.
can i enter more than one?
http://cuesavvy.xanga.com/698348507/silly-girl/
not much, not recent, but it's something.
I just thought it was interesting how you say that you disagree with people who believe that teens haven't learned any life lessons and then provide examples of experiences in which we may have 'been observant' such as first riding a bike or a night at a formal dance. You seemed disappointed in other adults who underestimated the life-knowledge of teenagers, but by your examples you don't seem to realize that most of us have had experiences that were far more life-changing than a scrape on the knee. From what it sounds like, you should be more observant of teen's actual lives rather than their insignificant experiences. For example, teen pregnancy/abortion, drugs/alcohol, rape/abuse, sex; the list could go on and on.
here it is
X
glad you're doing this!
Is this only open to US residents?
http://nici-x0.xanga.com/694844473/talking-to-the-stars/
Not recent, not my best, but about reaching for your dreams.(:
Hmm, I wonder if I should join...
$100 wouldn't do much good in britain haha!
can people from the UK enter ?
i would like to have ago at this , even without a cash prize .
@lovetwist - i second that =)
why not ill enter :
"The heart was a place for love, but has been torn down by someones unforgettable words"
How will I send my entry to you? o_O
I think I just might attempt this.
what about if we live outside the u.s. & wanna get involved ?
I am so going to do this.
YAY!
this is such a cool idea!
Here is mine! I'm so bad at writing but this story means so much to me!
When I was small, I was taught that all homeless, different skin
or 'abnormal' people are considered 'bad and uneducated.' My mom is an Asian Vietnamese and it is a common preference that older generations of Asians tend to preach discrimination. I, being small and easily trusting other people, believed what my mother said. I don't know
why I followed that notion but I stopped believing in that notion after
this story happened. My brother (the older one) and I walked along ABCs Supermarket
and saw this homeless guy with a harmonica in his hand. Automatically, I inflated with anger and hate towards the man because he was a slum or a loser in life who didn't belong here. But my brother was different. My brother felt sorry for him
for some reason and pulled out the only twenty bill he had and gave it
to the homeless guy. I was pretty upset because earlier in the day, my
older brother had promised to buy me some cakes or pastries just
because I was his little girl. He didn't seem offended by my outrageous
behavior so he told me something that I was going to remember for the
rest of my life. He told me that not all the people are bad. He told me
that the homeless guy with the harmonica is a good person who sits out
there daily playing his harmonica. The sounds from his harmonica is a
god given gift to this world. He told me it wasn't the homeless man's fault he was out there sitting. He could've lost his job, or lost his family or just anything. He told me that everyone had a good side to them but we make snap judgments to not see them. Only my brother knew that the man was a gift to
this world because he stopped for one minute to notice the beautiful music that was coming from that simple instrument. Who knows what that man could've been before he became a homeless. He could've been a musician or anything. He
told me it is the small things in life that most people walk by and
don't even notice. I cooled down automatically right after he told me
that and I felt thankful for some reason. My brother had taught me to
become a selfless humanitarian. He kept on persuading me to give
something to that homeless man when I had the chance. When my brother
visited me, he would give me money for myself. One time he came back
and asked me "what did you do with my money I gave you?" I surprised
him by telling him, "I gave it to that homeless guy with the harmonica
just like you use to do." It put a smile on my brother's face and
because of this story, I give a lot of money to that homeless guy every
Christmas. This story is extremely emotional and important to me which
I try to remember everyday. All of this happened because of my brother
and because of him, I look up to him so much. I don't think I can ever
find a brother who is that great. I don't think anyone will ever
believe I have that kind of brother. I can't even sacrifice him for
anything better. Because of him, I learn how to put other people's priorities before mine. Because of that incident, I have learned to notice every small things in life and to grow up thinking every one has a good heart within them.
Thanks for the opportunity! Most people are not as generous as you. (:
One entry per person?
http://aestheticoutlines.xanga.com/699251788/beyond-the-doorstep/
This is my entry. I wanted to message you since it would be faster, but it seems I have to be your friend first. (:
Im younger than most doing it... I mean I still have learned life lessons but I have to think about a right one...
Maybe on on grief? Accepting Loss?
Not over-reacting... (thats one that I know but still fail to listen to)
What are the conditions for "winning" or "not winning"? You say the winner will get $100, but how will this winner be determined? If it's simply personal preference, then the judging seems a little biased...
i'm in! i'm turning seventeen on may 11
Wow. I think I might just give it a try
@sniffleshylene - i havent read that far but this is not true -- "My mom is an Asian Vietnamese and it is a common preference that older generations of Asians tend to preach discrimination."
@ScreamingYourSecrets - i agree, how will it be paid out?
regardless, i'm going to begin.
@jeezcak3 - Okay this is a submission contest. Because of you, you just made it as if this is an English essay. Very rude but I think you should walk onto some other forum and correct other blogs. This is my opinion and you just ruined my story for me. Thanks alot.
http://xcrazyhecallsme.xanga.com/699251502/where-is-your-heart/
i dont know how to submit, so i just posted it on my page
)
First, let me say that this is an awesome idea! Second, here is my link:
http://manda-allgrownup.xanga.com/699258400/lesson-learned/
Enjoy!!
You had me until the word "essay."
Sent it to your xanga inbox!
That is a cool idea. Makes me think back to my teen days and what I learned. Not that they are that far away. The notice got my attention because I love to write. I can't wait to see what comes of it.
How do you enter?
ooh! sounds inviting! =)
Can't you do this for people OVER 19?? Such as... 22 year olds like myself? I could use $100!
Yeah! I can get a job with the money!! =D And knowing my blog at least was liked by SOMEONE is nice.
*goes to ponder on her life lessons* ???? :D ????
I would like to submit my entry. But how?
http://whitness-ignorance.xanga.com/694010823/item/
im 21. but i could scoop up some old poetry from when i was 18.
Can we post in here? Because I got one for you. =]
I think a great life lesson is that sometimes, you should hold your tongue. It's great to stand up for something you believe in or to defend others but in a lot of cases, it's better to just stay quiet. When an old lady at the mall, or even your own grandmother, goes off on how Obama is the scum of the Earth because his skin is darker than ours, I just stay quiet. I've had people call me racist for that simple act because "I wasn't defending the people." You see, I think staying quiet was the easiest thing I could do. My grandmother is old and racist. I'm not going to change her opinion even if I offer the most amazing evidence in the world. She grew up in a country (Russia/Estonia) that was racist and she does not like black people (and the reason I don't say African Americans is because it's not just American blacks that are her problem). I love her very much and her words do upset me but would it honestly be worth it to have an hour long arguement with your grandma (who doesn't vote by the way) that would not change her opinion anyway? Anyone ever tried to convinve a Christian to become an Atheist or vice-versa?
Which is point two. I'm an atheist. And if you (this is very general) believe in God, that's great! I mean, I'm not actually happy, I just really don't care. What you do isn't even my business and it certinley doesn't bother me. Of course, though, when a religious maniac comes up to me and starts questioning my beliefs in God (which are non existant), I get annoyed and I answer truthfully. After that, I keep my mouth shut. Yes, this person is giving me a 5 minute lecture on how I'm going to hell but do I really want to stay and argue? That would increase the time from 5 minutes to 55 minutes and I just don't have the time. He's not going to convince me to be Christian and he's definitely not going to become and atheist so why bother? I will stand there and nod.
I have to go and I'm sorry if this is not in essay format but I just wanted to put in my two cents. It's not a huge life lesson but a useful one. Pick your battles because sometime, it's worth it to just keep quiet and lose.
Awesome! I need to get started. (:
I fear competition.
/end.
I sent mine! In a message :]]]]
I'm wondering how you'll pay the winner. Considering they are not of legal age, it's not really a wise suggestion for teens to share personal information for the prize winnings. And I'm not sure about age restrictions for sites such as paypal.
If that's sorted out, this is an excellent idea.
I've been 13 since February 11,2009.Do I count?If so,let's see.........hmmm....life lessons.....I'm more of a "f*&@ life lessons kinda guy,but I'll try to think of something........
@sniffleshylene - hunn you're tripping! ;]]
@ifonlyicouldtellyouhowifeel - I understand your point, and it's a fair one. But I also did not want to make the assignment sound intimidating, or make someone think that only those with amazing/crazy life experiences need apply. Trust me, I'm getting my fair share of "I was raped" type entries too.
Hi... I'm 16 and I'll send you the link by a message
can people in the UK enter or not ???
This is great and not for the money, but for the exposure. I'm still racking my brain for things to write about.
must have been 19?
i was 19, am i still eligible?
I'M SO GOING TO TAKE PART IN IT ;DDDDDD
Can Singaporeans take part in this writing contest?
I'm interested.
what a great idea this is! i should use this with my youth group kids!
Definately entering! Getting started now!
I am fifteen
@jesusmoshes2 - haha.
I like that idea too! I started xanga at 15 so I'm right there with you!
Oh, thank god, I came here on the 14th exactly!
This is sweet!... I'm not in the U.S. though....
Where do you send your story to?
@jeezcak3 - Well I think you're rude and nosy. And don't call me hun.
@thecommonfate - THAT sounds like a life lesson in it's self!
Still waiting for the rest of the strong and the weak...
@MisFishie - Yes! @thecommonfate - No, I don't, ha, we'll see what happens.
@just_the_average_jane - aww, it's ok.
@Chinese_Sait0u - @Like_A_Tigah - Great!

I don't want to get the wrong article. Thanks!
stay posted, although chances are I will go with some of my journalist/writing friends instead of just Xangans. We'll see.
@jeezcak3 - LOL sorry, you can't, although the idea of having an ESL contest actually is rather attractive to me. Some other time?
@glimpseh2o - If you just turned 20 this year, you're still eligible.
@godessofvision - Maybe
@XxrockxXxgirlxX - LOL don't hurt yourself doing that!
@Robyn_has_a_secret - You can friend me so I can read the essay. If that's a problem, we can maybe do something else with e-mail or something. Message me.
@TastyAnonymity - No offense, but are you really only 18? In reading your entries, you seem to sound older. Oh well, I'll take your word for it. Yes! you can brag that you won and didn't need the money, and I'll keep my $100, ha, sounds good to me.
@Laryssa - yay!
I really can't wait now. =]
I'm in.
How do I enter?
@Hidden_Ram - @sygma_notation - you did not turn 20 until 2009, you are still eligible

@Manda_allgrownup - @xCRAZYhecallsme - @sniffleshylene - @AestheticOutlines - @Nici_x0 - Thank you!
@jeezcak3 - I know that the comment does not seem fair to you, but you are not allowed to critique essays on here. Many writers will make mistakes, but this contest and my comment section are not the place for correction. Thank you.

Happy reading!
My Entry Post: http://nightmarenoise.xanga.com/
Hmm a friend e-mailed me this contest after reading one of my papers. Quick question- does the paper have to be tailored specifically for this? The paper that I wrote has some references to Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men, as well as quotes from it...
I sent you a message with my post and I hope you got it. If not, here's the link to that specific post again, since I don't want to post my entry here in the comments and take up a huge chunk of space:

If there is one life lesson I have learned, it is that you cannot change the past, so you might as well work on the future. After nearly 8 years of having a fantastic childhood, with two parents doing their absolute best to raise my sister and me, I experienced one of the most life-altering experiences a child can: my mother died a little less than two weeks after my 8th birthday. What made it worse, though, is that she was 3 months pregnant. Here we were, expecting a new baby brother or sister, and it turns out we would lose both the unborn child and the mother carrying it. This event would, of course, change my life forever; the death of someone so close is something you carry with you every minute of every day. I will never get over losing my mother.
To continue with my story, I must first point out that I had been a pretty good kid up through then. A little too talkative, but I was an average, okay student. Following her death, though, I became a perfect student, much more obedient in class, and I would eventually enter a select group of gifted middle school students of my school district (one of the largest in the state). I have come to realize that because of my mother's death, I became more focused on my education. Now, as my junior year comes to an end, I am 4th in my class of around 750 students, and I have been in an on-and-off relationship for nearly 5 years with a guy I met in that gifted program (oh yes, I do believe teenagers can truly be in love!). I am planning on applying to Ivy League and other great universities, and there is a pretty good chance I will get a great scholarship. I owe my dedication to my schoolwork to my mother; her death made me grow up faster and get a better grip on the reality of the world. Although I would trade anything to have her back, I know that even though she is not here, she has still been one of the best driving forces in my life.
