Save the WHAT?!
UPDATE: I've been told that the dollar amount was not $80. Not sure what it actually was--for some reason I remembered $80. Apologies for factual error.
UPDATE 2: Yes, the email address is real, haha. One should not be bored on a Friday. I'm not promising it'll still work in a few days, though.October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is the most common form of cancer among women, and 192, 370 women are diagnosed each year (info from site link). It is of great concern to me as well; I've run in the Susan B. Komen race in my area, and my own grandmother died of breast cancer at the relatively young age of 64. Those suggesting this problem is not important to me can kindly check the red X in the right-hand corner of your browser--it magically sends me e-mail to register your disapproval. I promise.
Each year on Xanga, people do various things to spread the word about the need to be checked for tumors. For whatever reason, much of this centers around showing one's own breasts to promote the need for breast cancer awareness. Essentially, it's nudity for charity, which I suppose is better than "Beating homeless people for charity" and "Nudity for free t-shirts and beer". As far as I can tell, people get involved for two reasons:
1. A genuine passion for raising money and awareness about breast cancer.
2. An excuse to have their bodies praised and appreciatedFor the first reason, it is hardly necessary to resort to nudity to raise breast cancer awareness. A nude female tends to mostly attract men, not women (I said mostly! No angry e-mails please! :-p). Breast cancer does not affect most men. So how can you argue that showing your breasts raises awareness for other women to get their breasts checked out? And since being a man and being on Xanga probably means you don't have a woman (yes I went there), I doubt that the man will pass on the info to his girl. "Honey, I was looking at boobs today, and I think you should get checked!" is hardly going to fly.
But what about cash raised by Dan's Save the Boobs campaign? Well, last year the campaign raised $80 (some number) for breast cancer treatment. Not bad, I suppose. It's likely to raise about the same this year. But I tell you what. If the campaign isn't held this year, I will pledge $200 (some number X 2, as long as it doesn't put me in a cardboard box) for breast cancer treatment, in honor of my deceased grandmother. So if you care so much about breast cancer awareness, do you really want to go through with the campaign? You're depriving tumor-ridden women of free mammograms I would pay for by doing so. I hope you can live with this guilt. Hold on, wait--that sound is my poor grandmother spinning in her grave, and it's all your fault! But as for the second reason--can I first say, there are some FINE women on Xanga. I was checking my Xanga when a friend was around, and he saw some pictures of my subscribers. Let's just say he was impressed, haha. However, many of them are often unappreciated. I can read that between the lines in their posts. So yes, I understand the desire to show some skin to gain some appreciation. Some time ago, one of my subscribers did something rather exhibitionistic on Xanga. A lot of people judged her for it. I couldn't; I had seen her pulse update a few days ago saying how lonely she was. I had read her last few posts. The poor girl was merely reacting to no one appreciating her sweet smart self. I felt for her.
However, is just posting a picture of your naked torso the answer? There's no opportunity to really praise you for your beauty in more specific terms--the way your hair curls around your neck in a friendly embrace, or your lips open just a little bit when you're concentrating intensely about something, blah-blah-blah. Praising someone for the angle of their nippleage isn't the same at all. The best complements are specific to you, in real life--not a generic "Hey, nice rack, photo #22." I can't believe that most of my subscribers won't post regular photos and videos of themselves being normal, but some think that October is a great time to get naked. Does not compute! Look, lady, if you are feeling that complement-deprived, send pictures (of your whole self, please, no naughty bits, LOL) to email, haha. I'll send you back admiring complements. This offer is only open to those not participating in the contest. :-pAnother thought. What about comparison? You know people will comment as to whose breasts they think are most attractive or least. And it usually tends to be the same people who get all the complements. The poor athlete who is pretty and in great physical condition but has a small bra size tends to be ignored; or the older woman who has wisely raised children and worked hard is despised. I once was talking with a Xangan about the campaign, and she said she wouldn't enter because her breasts weren't good enough. That made me so sad it wasn't funny--I couldn't even think of something to say. Not good enough?! She's an attractive woman, and I am fond of her. Any campaign that makes a woman like her feel inadequate is suspect. Also, you never realize what's wrong with you unless you're forced to compare yourself with your betters. And since most of us are average in looks, well...chances are good you're going to feel less than good enough. The goal of breast cancer campaigns is to save the breasts, not encourage women to get surgery on their breasts to get implants! If I hear one more pretty woman suggest that she needs implants...grr. Competition is killing women--it's forcing them to resort to unhealthy behavior to land men, and spreading the message that normal you isn't good enough.
One last question. How many of you women have been bothered by a pervert/sexually aggressive person on Xanga? I'm surprised by how high the number is. Well, how do you think perverts get on Xanga? Why don't they go to other sites instead? They get on here because they find sexual material on Xanga. And, um, what do you think a page filled with breast photos is? Trust, most of us guys, on seeing such things, don't fall to our knees, close our eyes, and thank our deity of choice for his fine taste in curvilinear structure design. Well, the first two events might happen, but it's, um, for different reasons. Let me be more frank than usual--instead of "Save the Boobs", what about "Save the Semen?" I have a suggestion...
Because after all, they are animals, haha. Plus, too many of you are good friends to me, and it feels too much like walking in on a sibling in the shower or something. I like Xanga, not SEXanga, ok? As if it isn't difficult enough staying platonic with a few of you :-p lead me not into temptation!
Comments (69)
LOL I declined to join simply because I wasn't comfortable with exposing my boobies.
And yes, I have had (and still have) some crazy pervs on here!!! *shudder*
My aunt just recently got breast cancer... Its scary stuff. This is the first woman to get it in our family! *sighs* She's doing good! I think its great to be donating that much!
Perverts? Don't they make the world go round?! HA. Just kidding. I don't like perverts. They scare me. I met more the a few in my life time (so far... I'm sure more are to come!) *sighs* ...
LOL SEXanga....Interesting.
Thankfully I don't need to show some skin to get noticed. I'm happy with who comes on my site! I feel for her. She shouldn't have to do that to get noticed!
What is SO WRONG about nudity that you feel you have to challenge it??
Lol.
That's legit. I have to agree... You're probably the only post I've really read about this. I wouldn't post a picture of my anything because I'm not all about putting my goods out there for the public. You do raise some very good points in the process. I wonder if it will stop people in anyway. You know, you're not a bad guy.
"Competition is killing women--it's forcing them to resort to unhealthy behavior to land men, and spreading the message that normal you isn't good enough."
amen. you are such a discerning man, John. thanks for this post. you're one of xanga's treasures.
funny tags on this btw. lol
I hope many take your post to heart. Also, I've read some things about Susan G. Komen foundation being linked to abortion funding/support - if I can find a link to the article I will let you know, if you want.
I really had to smile at this... I am not participating... I'd feel odd putting any naked shots of me on the internet ... but especially Xanga, where I consider so many people (including you!) friends. Still - I appreciated what you had to say... you're very good at affirming the "compliment-deprived" women, from what I've seen. (Keep it up!)
Where is the original "save the" post? LOL
i laud this post. and i'm recommending, if you don't mind. i agree wholeheartedly with every point. that's rare for me. yay you! especially the bit about just being a body part.
Those are my thoughts, as well.
YES!! Very nicely done. I have had a few of the pervs stop in but I am boring so they tend to leave pretty quickly, and all I have shown is basically my eyes at one point and now my shoes. I don't want to even think what might happen if I showed say a knee cap or something risque like that. I have no problem with nudity mine or others but I despise the idea that someone will judge another based on their looks.
Hahah nice tags I think I will steal the sign.
legit.
you're just not into body-part-specific anti-disease awareness, huh?
Awww. Good post.
Actually, your information is inaccurate. I said we gained up to 8 free mammograms for poor women during the campaign. Your number of $80 is inaccurate.
And the footprints and the comments will reveal that mostly women look at those posts not men. Why? Men are going to go somewhere else for their porn not the save the boobs campaign. In fact, I have more women send me private messages of who is who than men.
I do remember when Jess did her post about showing herself topless. She gave a clear warning that a topless photo would be on that site and I remember you were one of the first to check.
Some men think it's ok to find any reason to degrade women and nothing will ever convince them they are wrong. Oh well, they have spoken well enough for themselves.
Excellent post!
I have an aunt and a cousin who battled breat cancer. I have 3 friends who are battling it right now. One is close to losing the battle.
I, myself, got scared recently after my yearly mammogram...they had to take further shots and do an ultrasound at the hospital. Everything turned out fine, thank goodness, but it was scary to think about having breast cancer.
I think most females who would bare their breasts on Xanga, do care about breast cancer awareness. But I also think they want the attention they will get for showing their naked breasts. It's no big deal to me, one way or the other.
It would be interesting though to find out what some breast cancer surviviors would think about this.
Or to let women who have lost breasts to cancer show their chests and scars. ??? But I guess no one wants to see that horror...or really think about that...most just want to see healthy breasts.
Again, excellent post. Always good to hear another opinion or side.
Oh, and I forgot to say - I cracked up at your tags. You should never write a post your penis hates....
@carolinaatnight - By the way, during the last campaign we did have a woman on xanga who posted her topless photos on my site who had suffered from breast cancer and she also wrote her story about surviving breast cancer. If you watch carefully throughout the campaign, you will notice scars of some of the women who survived breast cancer and who also had tumors removed.
So this is initially shock treatment but as you go through the month you will see a great deal of good that would come out of it.
Haha, well said. :]
"And since being a man and being on Xanga probably means you don't have a woman (yes I went there)" <--made me giggle a bit.
Here's another idea without showing naughty bits; go to this site (it's not spam, I promise):
http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=2
And click where it says click and for each click, the sponsor of the site will give money towards free mammograms for women in need. If you shop on their site, even more money will go towards the cause. It's brilliant, monetarily free, and naughty bit free.
@TheTheologiansCafe - That's great! I REALLY admire these women for doing that! As I said in my comments, whatever women want to do...show their boobs or not show them, it's no big deal to me. I am just glad money is being raised to fight a disease that has killed so many I love...Cancer has killed my Dad, sister, an aunt, my grandparents, and many friends. Given those odds...I'm sure it is somewhere in my future.
I just thought this was an interesting post, another point of view, so I said so!
Hey, I've been on Xanga off and on for almost 4 years, and I think this is the first time you've acknowledged me and my opinion. Thank you!
Hey, how about doing a campaign of photos to raise $ for testicular cancer!?
I like this post very much.
You are very sensitive to have posted something like this. Beauitful.
good post!
Sorry; I'm on the boob wagon.
Well stated, my friend.
You should get titty pictures from random people just for this awesome post.
and sorry about your grandma
i was all set to have some things to say.. and than I read your tags... your "penis hates this post".. my goodness...
"Please do not feed the perverts."--I love it!
LOL Boob wagon.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Again, that's great that one woman did that last year. Just a thought...then how about featuring ONLY women who have fought breast cancer?! And let them tell their stories? Show pics of how they looked going through treatments, while they were in the hospital, etc. AND feature photos (clothed ones) of women who have died from breast cancer...let their grandkids, daughters, sons, husbands, mothers, sisters tell us about them and their life and their battle?!
Just a thought.
THANK YOU!
You said this perfectly.
@galadrielspitcher - @tjordanm - @lilas1024 - @hilaw - @methodElevated - @Drizzles - @scrambledmegsntoast - @YouTOme - this post has been submitted for featured if you would like to vote for it.
all boobs are good boobs. (on females, thank you very much)
I'll join your campaign, I'll put $100 toward it.
A really good friend of my family is a breast cancer survivor. She is one of the most amazing people that I know, not only because she is a survivor but because she is an absolutely beautiful person inside and out. I love her.
But as much as I love her and as much as I support breast cancer awareness (I'm actually working on a flyer for an event that is giving uninsured women free mammograms) I would never show my boobs (and I'm actually quite proud of them haha) for "charity." There are soooo many other things one could do for charity. and yes there are soo many creepers on xanga.
I love this post.
Brilliant! I agree with everything you said, almost as if I had written it! As a matter of fact... wait a minute... what the...???
That's what I thought
Plus the whole posting pictures of your bits probably isn't looked on very highly by prospective employers or current employers. I know for a fact that if I were to post pictures of any kind of nudity, even artistic, I WILL lose my job.
I know it's for a great cause, but I think the whole you MUST be naked is a bit much. What's wrong with a bra? Low cut top? Alas, I'm just a prude I guess.
I don't need random strangers looking at me for appreciation or attention. I have a boyfriend for that.
Props for you!
Ps. I'm one of those girls who gets a lot of perverts on my site saying things I don't care to hear. And I don't think I post pictures that deserve those kinds of remarks either!
Save the boobs John.
Personally, i love showing off my boobs, but not on the internet. On my 21st birthday i wanted to flash, but i didn't want any guys to get the wrong idea, so i grabbed a bunch of girls and dragged them all into the bathroom to show off my boobs. Other than that, mostly it's just my boyfriend who gets to see them, and i think that hiding them from the general public makes them more appealing. I hate when pretty girls want breast implants too because...well, boobs are great in all sizes! (Personally, i think mine are perfect.) If i did think that showing off my boobs on the internet would somehow prevent or cure breast cancer, i would do it in a heartbeat, and i'm cool with other people doing it because, i think we should all be doing what we think is helpful.
I thought I was being pretty progressive when I purchased a "Save the Ta-Tas" t-shirt. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I can't quite connect the idea of showing off my boobs with the concept of breast-cancer awareness.
@Kontzicles - OMG hahaha that's the best tag ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@carolinaatnight - That would be a GREAT idea. That would actually be relevant instead of sexually objectifying women in the name of "breast cancer awareness."
--------------
Seriously, "save the boobs" is a slap in the face to breast cancer survivors. I like titties just as much as the next person (anyone can see my picture!) but I think this just crosses the line. If this was any other type of cancer of the body no one would think twice about posting the area relevant to the type of cancer. That's like posting pussy pictures in the name of ovarian(or any other type) cancer. It's just in bad taste. If they cared about the cancer they would feature women and their stories as their main focus, not tit pics.
It seems that some people advocate breast cancer awareness JUST because it involves tits. What sick people who don't take this illness seriously.
and on an extra note: I noticed people that rec'd the save the boobs (tit pics post) were mostly the pervy people greek was talking about.
Thank you for being sane.
@ShimmerBodyCream - Thank you.
I challenged this last year, did the math on the money they make mentioned that I personally send more and a simple send money please campaign would make far more. or if you really want to get naked spend one night working as a striper and send in the money. one girl could out raise the entire campaign in a 4 hour shift
My efforts did not put a dent in it. Sometimes you just can't win.
Oh behind this keyboard I'm not wearing a thing
Well said. I'm proud of you. Ken (Ducktape) did a similar post last year, and it was what initially attracted me to him.
@trunthepaige - Paige, you are such a tease.
I think with very LITTLE thought he could have come up with a different way to raise more $$$ and awareness of this cancer than his current campagine. But then he wouldnt get to see the tittles of his xanga friends.
@RaVnR - It stirs up inappropriate feelings.
I appreciate what the poster says in this Blog. Absolutely is the showing of "boobs" not necessary to get the point across, but it exploits what does not need to be exploited. Thank you.
Props to you my boy! (Why do I always feel like using turn-of-the-19th-century expressions on your Xanga?)
Although honestly, maybe I'm just jealous of people with big breasts. Also, I'm a Christian and I can't imagine God approves that much.
@Chinese_Sait0u - go jog your man tits off
@ShimmerBodyCream - i haz none. they be pecs.
@Chinese_Sait0u - pecs of flab.
I personally wouldn't show my breasts. For fear it is sending the wrong message, using the wrong tone. It certainly isn't in my nature exhibit and be so exposed, but perhaps acting radically is exactly what cancer awareness needs. So, while I don't feel I would just jump to do such a thing as bare my chest, I am glad that people are willing to do something to promote the cause.
Great post.
Kwil
Ok, to reply to those who had objections:
@RaVnR - What can I say--I love big burqas and I cannot lie. Err, I mean, my fundamental objection to nudity is the commodization of nudity. Do I love to see a pretty woman--of course! but the web has turned it into this impersonal thing where we stare at jpegs instead of really encountering the person in all of their personness. Also, something I didn't bring up because I didn't wish to scare anyone--there is an ugly trend of blackmail and shame of people who post anything that personal on the web. I've become more aware of this in recent months, and it is truly sad.
@kidzandK9z - I figure if people didn't already know where it was, I shouldn't advertise for free when I disagree, right? ha
@TheTheologiansCafe - Eh, I could reply and we could argue for days, but I've said my piece. Certainly, I can see how participating would be an uplifting situation for some women. However, given my previous experience with my grandmother and my feelings about this, it seems dreadfully tacky. I had to trim some of my rage out of the post, let's put it that way.
It was worth a shot, but good thinking
I might just wonder aloud whether it is correct to assume that all women submitting pictures of themselves do it for recognition or validation that they seem to be lacking. Isn't it reasonable to assume that a self-confident (in a healthy, non-conceited way), woman with no lack of love and appreciation in her life would submit a picture of herself? I understand the implications of nudity on the internet, but that doesn't automatically mean that all forms of nudity are perverse. It's almost similar to an artist wishing to do a photo collage of different sections of the human body. To show diversity, volunteer models are needed of all shapes and sizes. It all shows beauty. But...I'm also not justifying this campaign either. Can't say I followed it or even noticed it last year or this year. Just saying that intent matters. And nudity isn't always, by default, bad.
@Drakonskyr - Fine! Is it a real boob wagon, or is it silicon? haha.
@Chinese_Sait0u - Come on now, I was two seconds away from sending you my photo! Why the parenthetical comment! hahaha. j/k I'm not arguing that boobs are attractive, far from it.
@trunthepaige - TROLL! TROLL! You know how many jokes I've erased about your behind the keyboard comment? haha. But seriously, look at the diversity of the people who have agreed with this post--reinforces my opinion that I am correct.
@weedorwildflower - ooh, I'll write 10 posts like this if it attracts a good woman like yourself to my site! ha.
@lauralen - For the record, one of my Xanga friends posted a photo shoot of herself where she was naked. It was artistically beautiful, and I thought it was very well done. There are exceptions for me--not many, but a few.
Also, look at reason 1--I did indeed say that some women may do it entirely out of charitable reasons. But for me...I mean, my grandmother was an old, dear woman when she died. And so to see a lot of young woman naked to somehow support that cause seems terribly disrespectful. I won't say any more on this, because thinking about it makes me angry.
Are you trying to bring sanity to xanga?! Cut it out!!!
No really, nice work.
My company donates $100 to each employee participating in the walk.
Well, until further budget cuts at least....
@carolinaatnight - she sent me here... LOL
Can't say I disagree at all, excellent posting.
seems some religious perverts will stoop to any level for a cheap thrill... even the exploitation of a serious and sometimes deadly disease.
You know us girls pretty well - bravo.
And I've THOUGHT about sending in boob pictures to Dan, but I know it's wrong, and my boyfriend also said he'd rather I not do it. So I didn't. I know my boobs are beautiful enough without needing them to be compared.
THANK YOU for writing this!
You're so right, John.
Wow... I luff you so much more for saying what needed to be said.
You are pretty much amazing. I love the points you made in this post; I completely agree and couldn't have said it better myself. I give you major props for writing something so tender, beautiful, and honest. I agree with what others have said -- you're not a bad guy, at all.
Also, I am very sorry to hear about the passing of your grandmother. But, I am cetain she is proud of the man you have become and is smiling down at you.
@spyderlegs - Thank you! And for the record, your beauty is made greater by your classiness
Good to hear.
but I know we both knew of our love for each other.
@squiddichino - Aww, you're commenting now on my posts, and I'm flattered (and also saying about time, haha. :-p).
@FreeeVerse - See my note to spyderlegs
@thekeyhole - Thank you
@MidnightExotica - Oh thank you! My grandmother was a good woman, but she only knew Greek and my Greek was not that great. Sometimes I am saddened that we communicated so little
