Ready to be Married?!
Every year I start babbling about relationships around January 14th and keep it going until February 14. This year is no different.
I was standing with my family in Greece this summer, waiting for my father to introduce me to yet another relative. This is actually one of my favorite little family rituals, because my siblings and I are nice responsible types, and my father doesn't have to cough and say "well, you know those American judges, so uptight." Usually my parents say nice things :-p you have to remember, they are Greek, and so whatever is on their heart tends to come out, haha. This is wonderful when you are good, and train-wreck-drama fun when you are not.
Anyway, my father is going through the preamble "Wonderful son, a giant among men, I am honored just to have been involved in his conception*" blah-blah-blah...and then he finishes by saying "So now he's finished with school, and HE IS READY TO BE MARRIED!"
WHAT?! Me? Ready to be married? I cowered as I expected any moment to be surrounded by homely virgins*** of the village, summoned by my father's bellowing announcement**. What does "ready to be married" even mean?! Do I need a license for that? Do I declare my eligibility to some sort of government office? Ready to be married?...
*So, um, I may have taken poetic license. It's based on a true story!
**This is only funny if you know my father in real life.
***Ok, more likely, hot beauties. I feel guilt for having disparaged my saucy partisans.

I never metcha popsy. BUT LET'S BUY 'IM A BEER
You're never ready to be married...you learn that pretty soon after you get married (if you get married).
(Married 27+ years by the grace of God.)
Our spouses, children and church relationships: God's ordained sanctifiers!
I have some comely young cousins, but you'll have to let their mothers check your teeth first. Do we get to break plates at your wedding?
Lol, Thats pretty awesome.
Glad to hear it. Is he willing to match-make, as well, since he deems that you've "come of age"?
Hahaha that IS funny even though I don't know your papa
. Bc i can just imagine .. Plus Ive known men like that-what a blessing you are to him. Real sweet post, John
I can understand what you're saying. My family is from South Asia, and the general consensus seems to be that, once you're out of school, you're ready to be married. (Sometimes, it's even an arranged marriage, depending on the family. I definitely don't want that.)

That made me laugh. It just about sums up how I feel, too.

LOL you are so silly
I think it involves one of those "coming out balls" that requires you to wear a poofy white dress.
Atlest people knoww
LOL parents can be funny
as for marriage, i have this theory that nobody is ever ready. some people are more prepared than others, but nobody is really ready.
Don't let your dad get you into a marriage to your cousin from Greece with the reason that your cousin wants to be an American citizen...
I guess some people see that as the next logical step? maybe? good luck with that one!
poetic license = definitely a good thing. i was entertained!
if i had a dollar for everytime my nana (because my parents realize marriage is hard work, and realize it's one of the last things i want at the moment) mentions how, in her day, it was "at 21 it's "who will I have?" but at 22 it's "who will have me?"" i'd be a billionaire and buying a husband.
i can't wait for my 22nd birthday to come around and i'm happily not legally attached to someone!
Ready to be married? Interesting. I think I might be that too, but let me double check... Yes. Hahaha.
ow ow. well he sure has everything planned out for ya hm? my dad thought I'd date at least 20 guys before settling down! hah!
I hope I never reach that stage...being ready to be married and being hooked up with people
I'm with Drakonskyr, lets buy pint of a good strong Irish stout eh?
your dad sounds cute :]
ps audrey also said "remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it's at the end of your arm. as you get older, remember you have another hand: the first is to help
yourself, the second is to help others."
i am quite surprised at some of her quotes. i think i like her :]
@Ampersands_Anonymous - Let's have his poofy dress fitting at my place.
That is pretty funny though I imagine a little embarrassing for you?
And honestly, I don't think anyone is ever really "ready" to be married. If you think you are, you soon discover you're not after the wedding
hell, I'M not ready to be married.
You exude the sexay!!! Time to make some babies!!!! ha ha good story,
Call me crazy. I wish my parents would say that. Haha. Total opposites.
I guess he means you've got all your shit together? You're a catch?
Think of it as a compliment.
You kill me. I need to take you to india.
Haha! That's great.I love when other people decide you're ready to get married.
At my cousin's wedding last summer, my aunt looked at me and said, "You'rreeee neeeexxxxt!!"
*shivers* ...still gives me the heebie jeebies.
Oy vey. My fella's mother has badgered him (thankfully, I was not there at the time) about us getting married. Some folks act like there's a set timeline: 1-1.5 years dating, 6-15 month engagement, baby within the first two years of marriage... egad, Yenta, no! *Sigh...* They mean well, but... no.
Oh, and those tags: hilarious!
oh parents... funny, my dad is saying the opposite. "She's NOT READY TO GET MARRIED"
and I agree fully. haha.
Gotta love our parents! They mean well.

Lol this made me laugh so hard!!
i never met your father but that was pretty funny to me, i love older foreign men, they are so funny and i knew an old man who was greek and he made me laugh so hard, it was so funny...
You have to love parents
I'm not quite married yet (I will be in September) and my parents are fond of asking me when I think I'm going to have children while strongly hinting that they hope it's soon!
i am there with you im 19 in two months i should be engaged by now because albanian girls have to be engaged by at least 18 married by 20-21
@Aferdita16 - HA! Yes, it's how it is! Being Greek, it's not that much different, I am lucky I'm not a woman. The pressure would be much more intense otherwise!
That's pretty funny...sounds like something you'd see on a TV comedy.
As far as being ready, who really knows. My husband and I have been married over 10 years.
We didn't rush into it. We were ready, I suppose...if that means not being afraid of it. But I think some people "believe" they are ready...but really aren't. They are thinking more WEDDING rather than MARRIAGE. That's just me. I'm jaded now after hearing about these women on the radio who had gone out and bought wedding dresses...and they don't even have boyfriends. No wonder you single men are cowering, afraid of some of the women out there.
