Buck a Trend in 2012
For 2012, why not buck a trend and be different? Here are a few ideas I'm considering.
*Buy Old Electronics, Not New Ones. I like tablets, but netbooks can do many of the same things. Flip digital camcorders are now super-cheap because Cisco discontinued them. Let the innovators pay first-customer prices.
*Date the Girl-Next-Door, not the Girl-In-Singapore. Ah, yes, your first cousin met the love of his life via sweethoneyChristiankisses.net, and she was quite nice at the Christmas Party. So of course you should use it too! But...there's something so nice about living in the same town, knowing the same people, and having the same friends. Switch it up this year, and see if you could be overlooking someone quite nice in your neighborhood.
*Friend, Follow, and Add Less. I always laugh when Twitter people beg for "just 5 more followers to get to 200." More friends don't always mean more fun. Lately, I am shocked when I realize how many months and weeks it has been since I have talked to some close friends. Besides, every good economist knows the value of making oneself scarce. Here's to being more exclusive in 2012.
*Rebuild Old Friendships and Connections. Sometimes old friends are the best friends. Let's be honest...sometimes old friends can be irrational for a little while. We may decide that absence may make the heart grow fonder--or less drama-filled, at least. But sometimes you can go home again (and overuse old cliches), so try it out.
*Commit, Don't Experiment. We do love our free trials and to try anything once, right? But some things are only enjoyed if one invests. Exercise, for example, is really difficult if one just exercises every so often: it's the daily, consistent exercise that feels good and yields results. Don't just dabble in everything.
*Linger in the Neighborhood, not Run through the Neighborhood. Turn back the clock to the 50's, and walk your neighborhood regularly. One of my neighbors knew almost every pet (and owner) on the block. I thought that was so sweet. Sometimes I feel like we just end up running or driving through our neighborhoods.

This all just seems way too risky and adventurous to me. I should stick with the monotony of new friends, new adventures, Russian mail order brides and saving up for the Iphone 18, due out next week...
Wait. *thinks*
love this! Happy Near Year, Greek. Love you!
like your list!! best wishes in 2012... http://greekfood.about.com/od/greekbreadspitas/r/vassilopita.htm
i don't recall this growing up - but i do remember a less sweet bread that we'd put butter on and i think at new year's there would be a few (wrapped) dimes baked into as well for good luck...
and at easter there were hard boiled eggs baked into it?
lol -I'd love to share that second one with my son, if I thought he'd hear me. Of course he just keeps taking a shine to asian girls at his college who then of course want him to follow them to their country.
Not a happy scenario for the family at home.
Love your last one too.
It is good to know the neighbors and few young people realize that, they are so busy running (or more likely driving) through, just as you say. Running here, running there, and never seeing what's in their own back yard.
Wishing you a good 2012.
I like the first one- down with the tablets!! Sorry, i'm hopelessly devoted to my netbook
Anyways, Happy New Year!
i like these!!
I shall prefer to stick with my usual tactic of remaining as utterly oblivious to trends as i possibly can. I do have a knack for that after all and its good to stick to your strengths.
@xplorrn - Yes! the bread with stuff baked in! I just had that today, it's great! Nice memory, thanks for the reminder.
Good stuff.
Walking through the neighbourhood would also double as committing to exercise, it's a two-for-one deal! Though my neighbourhood has a few apartment buildings and may be a little too hard to get to know all the people living in them...
Happy New Year!
made me chuckle actually. i've only seen my neighbors once. That was just one set o them too. I live in a huge apartment complex but most of us work at the hospital, go to school at the grad/med school etc. shrugs... so much or walking my neighborhood.
hmm... I would like to take you up on some of those, but... 1, I'm not a tech-geek. 2, I already dated the guy-next-door, it was a disaster. 3, I'm not on twitter. 4, I don't live in a neighborhood... I guess I could buck a trend and take less showers! Don't worry, when my students complain, I'll give you all the credit!
Loving the old electronics part! I really wish I could get my hands on a Nintendo since mine no longer seems to function haha. Loveeee these trends!
You know, I think I already do all of these (not counting the second). I guess I don't have to change a thing!
I bought a Sega Nomad instead of an Amazon Fire, I think that counts. Or it will once I find the adapters I need to make it work...
Love this post. Lol. Happy New Year.
Happy New Year!
"One of my neighbors knew almost every pet (and owner) on the block." What a creeper -_-
I don't want my neighbor knowing my pet. He reminds me of the Character Stanley Tucci played in, The Lovely Bones.
Other then that... I liked your suggestions!
Keep em comin'
you know, I actually think I will try this.
rather love this. rather love many of your recent posts. i read them and think "oh man, i should comment" and then things happen like broken computers or driving to chicago. anyways...you are a good writer. I love your blog. and that you helped me get your posts sent to my e-mail so i can keep up. Happy 2012--may you rock it out:). oh. and come to Brazil sometime!:)
